RETAZOS was founded in the City of Havana in January 1987 under the direction of the teacher and choreographer Isabel Bustos.
From the natural and everyday gesture, Bustos has created a lyrical and intimate language that seeks to reflect the dissimilar contradictions of its time. From a creative vanguard, RETAZOS directs its choreography towards a singular projection scenic. Her works represent a forceful chronicle of Latin American spirituality in a reflective dance, unpredictable, legitimate and above all vital. In its years of existence, Retazos has trained a considerable number of dancers and has presented on stages in Ecuador, Mexico, Colombia, Uruguay, Brazil, USA, France, Sweden, Holland, Italy and Spain, among others. Bustos has conceived special choreographies for different companies professionals such as the Union Dance of England and Repertory Dance Theater of the USA, and maintains a stable collaborative work with the Memory Wax Company of Sweden. From its work headquarters, located in the Historic Center of the City of Havana, it maintains a sustained work with the community, RETAZOS annually organizes events such as Havana Transits, Impulsos, DVDanza Habana and together with the Office of the city’s historian, the International Festival of dance in urban landscapes “Old Havana: City in Motion” included since 1999 in the international circuit “Cities that Dance in Urban Countries.
