*La Caridad del Cobre, or Our Lady of Charity, is a popular Marian title of the Blessed Virgin Mary known in many Catholic countries. She is the Patron saint of Cuba. The National Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre was built in 1926.
Day Two – July 8
- See Santiago, the second largest city in Cuba, the birthplace of rum, salsa, and the revolution.
- Lunch
- Feel the rhythms of Santiago with Conga de San Agustin
- Back to B&B
- Home-cooked dinner
- Casa de la Trova* (Live music)
*Trova is one of the great roots of the Cuban musical tree. In the 19th century a group of itinerant musicians known as trovadores moved around Oriente, especially Santiago de Cuba, earning their living by singing and playing the guitar. According to one writer, to qualify as a trovador in Cuba, a person should a) sing songs of his own composition, or of others of the same kind; b) accompany himself on the guitar; and c) deal poetically with the song. Trova musicians have played an important part in the evolution of Cuban popular music.
Day Three – July 9
- Depart for Holguin
- See Holguin, 4th largest city in Cuba
- Private home and studio of artist Cosme Provenza – Cartoonist, illustrator, and muralist
- Check in to B&B
- Continue to see Holguin
- Infant Theater with Historian
- Dinner – Classic Cuban Pork chop meal
Day Four – July 10
- Depart for Gibara
- Lunch at Velasco Cultural Center, one of the most significant pieces of architecture
- Check in to B&B, receive film festival credentials
- FILM FESTIVAL ACTIVITIES
- Dinner on your own
